I got First Class Honours!
I can't believe it, my thesis got me First Class Honours!!! I'm now "Dylan Carmichael BComp (Hons 1st)"
Woohoo!
So happy!
Don't know what I'm going to do to celebrate yet, since Don works tonight.
OMG, This means that I can go on to PhD if I want to! OMG OMG OMG!
Thesis is complete, just need to take it to the office and I'm DONE!
OMFG it felt like it would never get there!
I've submitted the final Major Revision of my thesis!
This week it's grammar and spelling.
8 days:I will have performed my final edits and submitted my thesis for good. The Last (Wednesday Night) Supper. We're going out somewhere (don't know where as yet).
9 days: Figuring out how the hell to pack everything into my suitcases. I may need to get another one.
10 days: I'll be having my farewell thing, eating Mexican at the Prickly Cactus and drinking Fishbowl Margaritas. This will be followed by heading over my beloved Northern Club and downing mystery shots, BHPs, and possibly some Absinthe. Danielle is coming to that from Burnie! Woohoo! None of my voxerhood are coming because they're slack (and because not one of them lives in Tasmania any more (oh, except Olivia, she's coming!))
11 days: Lunch with the family, officially for my sister's birthday, also officially the last time I'll see Mum, Dad, Rowan and Renata before I move. TasUnity is throwing me a farewell dinner of their own. They do such fantastic food! I swear being a good cook is a prerequisite for being a TasUnity Host.
12 days: all my waverley possessions will either be at Lulworth (like the bed and alarm clock) or in my suitcase(s). Staying with the lovely Glennys and Anne, who are taking me to the airport the next day. Dinner at Susie's Hoong Fatt with the G&A, David and John, and Scott. Yay!
13 days: probably an early flight (Don flew out at 6:30am) and then I'll be in Tannum Sands. OMFG I can't wait! I miss Don so much!
Well folks! it's Results Day again!
Advanced Computer Security: 86% High Distinction
Advanced Computer Networks: 73% Distinction
Data Mining and Machine Learning: 72% Distinction
For the record:
50%=Pass
60%=Credit
70%=Distinction
80%=High Distinction.
So I just scored my Distinctions, but apparently I reasonably well deserved my HD. I've just worked out that I scored 92% on the exam for that unit!
I only Credited the exam for Data Mining (66%)
and I can't work out networks since I *still* don't have the results for that second assignment back yet.
but yay good marks when I was worried about how I did on the exams!
:D
I wrote an absolutely ATROCIOUS Paper for my computer security class. I mean seriously screwed. Crappy grammar, little clear direction, and a full on hanging sentence... I mean
"This is so that the system can determine whether
8. Conclusion"
etc etc
when I saw that, I could have cried.
My conlcusion was beautiful... except I didn't actually wind up arguing those points in the paper itself.
I don't quite understand how I got a CREDIT (60%) for this paper. But hey, I'm not about to argue. She's the genius, not me.
Well, I have some work tutoring for Computer Networks, (4 hours a week, 2x 2hr classes) and while in the first class I felt like an idiot when I said at the end of the lesson "I'm Dylan, by the way, I forgot to say that at the start" I otherwise felt like I did a recent job(edit: And a decent job, too)! I just need to familiarise myself a little better with the tute material next time!
yay!
Well, tomorrow, I start at the Uni of Tasmania as an honours student! I've also been offered a temporary job on the help desk for the first four weeks of semester at least, for about 8 hours a week. I was so impressed, and obviously I've impressed the local help desk staff, since they didn't advertise the position, they called and told me they were hoping that one of my project members from last year (one of the ones I really liked) would be interested in the other position.
So I hadn't applied, and there was a job for me, about 8 hours a week. And I've also put my name down to do a couple of tutorials a week. So hopefully I'll be bringing in some money while I study!
Lets see... My last post was on the 14th, which means, oh! it means I've actually graduated since my last post, and in fact, so has my sister. I hold a Bachelor of Computing, while my sister has just completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Furniture design and a Minor in Sculpture.
She's good, she's REALLY good. She makes gorgeous furniture Like the stuff I'm about to show you
This is a table and chairs set. Unfortunately not for sale, these were produced in (I believe) her first year of furniture design. The vase and the flowers are bought, but if you look carefully, you can see a whole bunch of painted fish. They're pretty awesome, I want her to make me some.
So she's a great artist. And a crap organiser. Her exhibition opening was the night before her graduation, mainly to accomodate us who were going down for the graduation. It ran very smoothly, and there was heaps of food. I suspect that's because she left it until a week before the event to even half-heartedly send out invitations. She didn't actually email anyone except her lecturer, who she asked to forward the email, and she called her church down there and asked them to please mention that her exhibition opening was happening (I'm not sure quite how detailed her message was) So there was My brother and I, mum, dad, Sister, Sister's Furniture Design Lecturer, and the people Sister Boarded with while studying. We catered for up to 50 people. Frustration plus. Her Graduation was nice, it was muhc shorter than my own, which was held in an un-air-conditioned old hall which is quite impressive, but not somewhere you want to be sitting for 300 names and a keynote speech and a bunch of ritual. (90 minutes). Sister's graduation ceremony lasted about 45-60 minutes, there were only about 90 Students for hers. hmmm. Oh! so for my graduation, I'd already looked into restaurants and booked a place for dinner a month in advance. Sister hadn't decided where she wanted to go 10 minutes before dinner. She said "Lets go to the Casino for Tea!" when we got to the car, and that was fine, the Casino there does really nice food. She didn't like one of the restaurants there because the food seemed too fancy (They talked it up by mentioning locations and brands) then we looked at the buffet option, and apparently there was nothing that grabbed her fancy. Now, I understand these sentiments, but that's why you plan these things in advance! We stuck with the Buffet place, because it looked quite nice, and there was stuff there everyone liked.
So... I love my sister dearly, but I'll never leave her in charge of organising something I'm attending again if I can help it.
In other news, we went to mum and dad's for Christmas, and that was nice. We didn't go to boat harbour for the ultra-family do, and that was nice too (mum's extended family all get together at boat harbour, in a not-large house, and there are 30+ of them.
I've had some trouble getting computer bits delivered. Apparently for Tasmanian/Australian Couriers, the Bass Strait takes 5+ working days to cross. Interestingly, AusPost and International Mail doesn't seem to have that issue. You know something's up when a parcel from America can arrive in 4 days, and a Domestic Courier takes 5.
I've just ordered a new Laptop for uni, I figure that Scholarship means I can afford to replace my current machine (Not that there's anything actually wrong with my current laptop, it's about 3 years old) So I sprang for commercial licenses of Office so I can use Standard software for my business.
Finally, the poor little dog is not going to be happy with me. I've just booked her in to be desexed. She's just kinda reached -that- age. But still, it's for her own good.
That's my news really. Oh, and I finally confirmed that I'm in honours. apparently they sent me a letter of offer in November, but I never received it. oh well, problem solved, I got them to print me out a new one.
I won a scholarship worth $5000 for next year! I assume that means I've been accepted for the Honours position!
Woooo!
Well, they're not quite in at the start of typing this message... I get them at 9AM today, and my computer says 8:58 and the uni aren't coughing up any results yet no matter how much I hit the damn F5 button! I'm hoping to be first in since I'm already logged in. My computer's just hit 9AM and now the rush begins, a page that reloaded in 3 seconds before is now taking 60+! But, on the bright side, it is actually loading! in previous result releases, I've had to wait 30 minutes after the release time to actually be able to log on, so they've obviously improved their services!
I got them, OMG and they are glorious, worth the 3 minute loading time!!!!
3HDs and a DN! Amazingly, the DN was in a unit I thought I'd aced (Web Management) and was only 2% off an HD as well, the good HD was for Project, and the other 2 just scraped through for Knowledge Based Systems and Software Construction. But when all is said and done, I was at one point worried about *passing* Software Construction!
So I graduate, I'm a shoe-in for Honours and probably for an honours Scholarship (Jackie said you needed at least 5 HDs to really be looked at for it, I've had 6 this year. I'm gonna be on the Honour Roll too. WHEEEEEEE! (obviously, I'm gonna graduate too, which is awesome!
